The majority of the camps on the Wonderland Trail are reserved for the 2012 hiking season, but don’t despair if you had your heart set on going. 30% of the camps in the park are set aside for first come, first served permits. If you don’t hold a reservation for this year, show up in person to the Wilderness Information Center the morning before or the morning of your trip, with 3 (count ’em- 3), trip choices. Usually the Rangers can help you find something suitable to get you on the trail, although it may not be your first choice. Keep in mind, that the journey is even more beautiful than the destination. Most of the camps along the Wonderland are in deep forest and are not on high ridges with great views. That being said, meander your heart out during the long days on the trail and don’t fuss about where to park your head on your pillow when the moon comes out.

If the camps you need are full and no reservation can be made the other option is to try and get a first-come, first-served permit. You can try to acquire one by coming into any Ranger Station in the park either the day you want to start, or one day in advance of when you want to start (no sooner than one day). Rangers will work with you to try and put together a permit. However, realize there are no guarantees that you will get the exact itinerary you want.
